Pre-NACS Show International Convenience Tour to Los Angeles 30th September - 3rd October 2008
Here are four store visit highlights of our LA tour:
TESCO FRESH & EASY: Official visits to two of Tesco's 10,000 sq ft LA stores. Tesco's new US format is radical in a number of ways. Self-checkout is a growing share of transactions in some European convenience stores, but Tesco’s decision to go 100% self-scanning is a global first. How does Tesco train staff differently to make this work and what do customers think?
FAMILY MART - FAMIMA: Family Mart now has over 13,000 C-stores Worldwide. We visit two of their "Famima!" US C-stores. Famima brings Japanese excellence in high quality fresh product in a new "premium" experience to US Convenience and targets middle and upper incomes and the 21-41 age group. As convenience markets mature, is C-store segmentation the future?
BP's HELIOS HOUSE: Helios house is the most radically innovative gas station in the World today. It is designed to explore ways to make buying petrol on the forecourt a little greener and the consumer experience a little better. Staffed by specially trained staff, this visit will provide our group with a whole new perspective on their fuels business.
CHEVRON "EXTRA MILE": Chevron spent 3 years developing this new format and focused carefully on the particular, defined needs of their heavy C-store users who account for two thirds of store sales. The new focus rewards consistency of offer and execution, has gourmet coffee, fresh prepared food and a franchisee friendly model that allows 20% of store product to be flexed. LA, along with Seattle, is one of the first markets to see this new format. Can Extra Mile go international?
In addition to Tesco Fresh & Easy, Famima, BP Helios House and Chevron Extra Mile, we will also be visiting 7 Eleven, Wholefoods, La Brea, Bristol Farms and Trader Joe's and hearing from Famima Executive Vice President Hidenari Sato. We will be staying at the Renaissance Hollywood hotel.

"I attended the 2007 NAC's Study Tour and found the event inspirational - great networking opportunities, great stores and inspirational speakers. It was time well spent and I got a great feel for the US retail environment in a very short time. The whole event was well organized and enabled me to relax and focus on increasing my knowledge and bringing learnings back to the UK." Paul Whittaker, Trade Marketing Manager, The Wrigley Company Limited.
