Applegreen videoApplegreen is a rapidly expanding new forecourt concept which has taken Ireland by storm and has now moved into the much larger UK market. Petrogas, the Applegreen operator, showed an 80% increase in profits last year. The Applegreen concept successfully integrates fuel and fresh foods in a revolutionary way. The promise of consistently low fuel prices contributes to an increasing brand loyalty which is carrying over into very successful private label ranges - including a bottled water which has 23% of the water category.


Tesco Express videoTesco Express Hinckley is the first of the new generation of Tesco convenience stores designed to save energy. It has natural lighting and ventilation and waste-powered underfloor heating. Chillers have doors. Tesco have been experimenting with doors on chillers for some time and have now announced that they intend to make them standard in their Express convenience format. The result gives this store a completely new feel. The convenience store of the future?


Waitrose videoWaitrose has unveiled its first ever convenience format with the opening of a new 5,815sq ft shop in Trinity Square. Three more are coming, all with sales areas from 500 to 700 sq m. There is a strong focus on specialist service counters and fresh produce, including specialist cheeses, a fresh meat and fish counter and freshly baked bread. There is a self service food bar where customers can choose from breakfast foods including smoothies, granola and yoghurts in the morning, freshly made baguettes, sandwiches and salads at lunch and meals for the evening.


SPAR China videoSPAR China Spar Hongtu in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, is an example of how Spar successfully competes in China. This store is independently owned by the Hu family who are hypermarket retailers from Dongguan. The Hu family established their business in 1992 with a 60sq m store and in November 2006, joined Spar. Today, they operate 26 hypermarkets as well as 2 convenience stores, occupying a total of 300,000sq m of selling space and employ 7,000 staff. SPAR now operate in 7 provinces in China serving a total of 380 million consumers out of the 1.3 billion Chinese population.


Pick n Pay videoPick n Pay a leading supermarket and hypermarket retailer in South Africa, launched their convenience forecourt format in December 2008 under the banner, Pick n Pay Express in a JV with BP. Pick n Pay has introduced interesting technological innovations which are featured in this video. Electronic shelf edge labels have been implemented to ensure pricing accuracy and streamline price changes. Electronic tagging of higher value items has been introduced to reduce shrinkage. The stores are live on SAP to optimise performance and stock is purchased ia an efficient 'pick from store' supply chain.

Their company has grown into the largest seller of fruit, vegetables and other fresh produce items in South Africa, with a total of over 100 stores. The new Food Lover's Market format featured in ouir video takes shopping for fresh produce to a whole new level. Using international trends as inspiration these upmarket food emporiums still offer the best quality fruit and vegetables at low prices, but also offer a range of other specialist departments.
